Tatyana Akman / by Sharon Angelia

The first time I took photos of her was 3 or maybe 4 years ago.

She was so young, just about to start her dream. She smiled a lot on the day when I shot her.

Moving forward, I got a chance to shoot her again.

This time, she smiled a lot, like usual.

But something in her is moving. I could see her transforming.

Her sunset was yellow, with some clouds hanging above the sky.

The tide was low and it flows gently among her.

Pebbles, moss, and wood scraps, they give an earthy sense to her warm sunset.

S: Modelling, acting, music, hand-poked tattoo - those are... a handful things to do. Do you think those are your ways to find balance?

T: I guess so. Finding balance is an everyday struggle, I guess. For me, I find it difficult to stay the same. I always have this desire for change, I'm always transforming, I’m always changing.

S: What’s one word that describes you?

T: Hmm.. that would be eclectic.

S: Tell me a childhood fantasy. Was being model, actress, singer, and tattoo artist, a part of it?

T: I wanted to be a mermaid, I think that's what most girls dreamed about. But then as I get older, I realized that she lost her voice and killed herself for a man she barely knew. So I just shake that idea of being a mermaid, hahaha.

I think I always wanted to do what I’m doing now, I had it written in the diary, ‘I want to be a model and see my face on a billboard in between all the skyscrapers. I want to perform in front of audience, I want to be in movies, I want to be a tattoo artist like Kat Von D.’

At that time, I thought it was just stupid dreams, but they do come true. I guess I’m living my childhood dream at the moment and I’m just so content and grateful for this.

S: Unlike hand-poking, modeling, acting, and music are collaborative works. Do you have to compromise to get it done?

T: Yes, there are times where I have to compromise. But, I work with people who share the same value as me, so I’ve never found it difficult to compromise.

S: How do you put the line between your public and private identity?

T: I don't know. Actually, I have never thought of that. I'm just me, you can read me like an open book.

S: Has your look ever been an obstacle for you?

T: Ah, yes. There are times where people say that my look is too unusual for this entertainment industry. But I like the way I am, I like me now. I have come a long way, accepting every part of me, so I never listen to those whose words do not matter to me.

With this curly hair I have, it empowers me, it’s a part of my identity that now I’ve come to love. It’s an advantage too because people recognize me easily.

S: When you can't judge which one's prettier - the sky, sun, or ocean, have you ever thought of how people judge you as a person?

T: I don't think nature ever judge, and that's what I love most about it.

Nature just gives. Being in and surrounded by nature makes me feel life I’m in my mother’s lap - safe and sound. In return for her gift, we just have to respect her, our mother nature, and spread the love. Give the love for everyone, every creature in this earth.
